To Kill Salim Kancil: A Tragedy of Humanity in Indonesia and Solution to Reduce The Effect

The murder of Salim Kancil is a prove that in this modern era we lose something that is very important, a humanity. That is beyond our imagination that people can kill other people with a very sadistic way. Salim Kancil, 51 years old farmer in Lumajang, was killed by 40 people. They killed Salim Kancil by electricuting and decapitating him in front of several children who study in kindergarten near that place. The children were screaming and crying while watching the crime, absolutely they can see the tragedy crystal clear. Salim Kancil was killed because he rejected the sand mining running by a big corporation in Lumajang. This sand mining is really harmful  for the environment  and the farm. This tragedy will not only effect present generation but also to our next generation, so we should follow up this case by several ways to reduce the destructive effect in the future.

Firstly, the police should looking for and find all of the actors of Salim Kancil murder, from the 40 people that execute the plan until the intellectual daader. After that, follow up them as per our regulation. Give them a proper punishment as the procedure. One of the actors is Hariono, the regional leader of Lumajang, having been nonactived as per command from a Minister of Home Affairs, Tjahyo Kumolo. The rest of them are still in a process and we hope it will be clearly exposed and punished as soon as possible.

Secondly, give a safety right to all of the people in this country, even the poor people. The police in this case has a big responsibility. If the police do their job correctly this crime can be prevented. Salim Kancil came to the police office on September 10th to ask a protection because he was feeling unsecure and getting a terror. Although, nothing happened, the police were doing nothing to follow up Salim Kancil’s permission until that tragedy happen on September 26th.

Thirdly, close the sand mining in Lumajang as soon as possible. WALHI, the environmental research team find that this sand mining causes a lot of harmful for the farm. The soil become polluted and this affected to all the farmers in there. They lost their farm and could not produce something. So that, the conflict is getting bigger and bigger. In fact, the rejection has been coming a long time ago before the murder of Salim Kancil. On the others hand, people who get the authorities ignore that, by pretending that everything is fine. The statement to close the sand mining is accepted by Minister of Agriculture, Ferry Mursyidan Baldan and still in progress.

Last but not least, we need to rehabilitate the children who watch the process of Salim Kancil murder, the children and grandchildren of Salim Kancil. They got a post- traumatic syndrome because of the tragedy. They are a victims too. They will go through the future by fear, less confidence and even having a  feeling to revenge. National Commision for Child Protection must  ensure that they will heal from that traumatic, they can forgive and go through the future as normal as other children. Because the next generation is the most important thing for our future, we need to secure their rights.
